Fall Fundraiser and 30-year Anniversary Celebration

In the spring of 1979, David Orr was elected alderman of Chicago's 49th ward.  As an Independent Democrat, David captured the imagination of many Chicagoans tired of machine politics.

Dear Friends:

Thank you for taking the time to visit my website.  I believe the cornerstone of a strong democracy is a free and fair election system.  To that end, we each have a responsibility to rid our election system of the many institutional, procedural and legal barriers that needlessly keep people from voting.

As the longest serving elected official in Cook County, I am proud of my record and my efforts to reform elections here and across the country.  But whether administering elections or improving access to public records, the success of my reforms is best reflected in my Leadership, Accountability, Innovation, and Efficiency.

Explore this site to learn more about my record and my ideas for change.  Also, please consider making a financial contribution to my re-election campaign.  With your help, we can enact necessary reforms, move people to vote and restore confidence in our democratic system.

Best Wishes,

Give School Janitors Paid Sick Days

Germs.

Yet another thing wrong with privatizing public sector jobs: germs. In 1996, Chicago Public Schools privatized janitorial services. To trim costs, they cut janitors' jobs and contracted them out to a company that doesn't provide paid sick time. Back then, it was a short-sighted way to save money. Rather than resolving productivity disputes with more accountability, it pitted students against poorly paid employees. Today, in the era of the H1N1 virus, privatization's unforeseen consequences are even worse.
